Costa Rica’s second-largest island, Isla Chira, is a unique island located deep in the Gulf of Nicoya and inhabited by delightful people.
It’s forests are predominantly Dry Tropical and Mangroves. The first inhabitants of the island were individuals of the Chorotega tribe. Today, a group of very entrepreneurial female descendants from this tribe have started an association that offers lodging, tours, souvenirs, and various other activities on the island. We will be staying at their lodge during our visit.
Our first day begins with a transfer from San Jose to a port called Puerto Palito on the eastern shores of the gulf. We will boat through the mangroves and across to Isla Chira where our paddle will begin on the island’s west coast. We will circumnavigate the northern side of the island, your guides will lead you to a beach for a delightful picnic lunch. If the tide permits, we will finish with a beautiful paddle through the mangroves to the town of Nancite where a local bus will shuttle us five minutes to the Amistad Lodge operated by the local women’s association. The second day of our trip, everyone has the option of mountain biking or bus touring the island during the morning. After lunch at the lodge, we will board our kayaks once again for another beautiful paddle through the main estuary and then across the gulf to the private port at our hotel, Ensenada Lodge. This evening we will celebrate with happy hour by the pool and a feast at the lodge. On our third and last day, we will transfer to San Jose after breakfast (about a 2.5 hr drive).
The average distances covered per day are 7-13 km. Our key to a successful and fun adventure is good food, good company, a positive attitude and plenty of beer and wine! Come and share the fun with us!
