Adventure Kids - Frequently Asked Questions

Adventure Kids Camp Information 2009
Welcome to Camp!
Many of you have older brothers and sisters who have attended camp before, but for some families, this may be the first camp experience. Our philosophy is that children learn and grow through playing, sharing and creating. Best of all, they do this in a healthy, country environment with plenty of room to run and explore. Here are some frequently asked questions:
Q: What does the price include?

A:
Camp costs $125 per camper ($120 for siblings) for Monday-Friday Jan. 5-9, 2009. This includes transportation to and from the Adventures Under the Sun office in Escazú each day, entrance fees to University for Peace, swimming pool, Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo and a camp t-shirt. It doesn't include lunch, drinks or snacks (see below) or extra camp t-shirts (see below).
Q: What does my child wear?

A:
Please wear a camp t-shirt (one will be provided to you, extras are available for purchase for $8) with shorts and closed tennis shoes. I recommend sun block and a baseball cap. Please label all items, even shirts! Send a bathing suit and towel in your child's backpack each day because we will swim and do water games.
Q: Who will care for my child?

A: We have a wonderful staff of responsible “kid people”! Directors are Carol Weir and Carlos Chacon. Carol has five years experience working at summer camps in the U.S. and as a lifeguard, and is certified in First Aid. She is also a mom, a journalist, and a former elementary school teacher. Carlos is a Costa Rica biologist, environmental educator and nature guide. They are the parents of two boys, one of whom will be an Adventure Kids camper this summer. We also have high school students working as junior counselors.
Q: What about transportation?

A:
Our days begin at 9 a.m., when you will drop your child off at the Adventures Under the Sun office in Escazú. From there, we will board a microbus and our driver will take us to the University for Peace area in Ciudad Colon. We will be back at the Adventures Under the Sun office at 3 p.m, and children should be picked up promptly.
Q: What kinds of activities will my child participate in?

A:
Our days at University for Peace grounds and on a private farm adjacent to UPeace are divided into sports, art, special activities, and free time in our camp centers. We will also take field trips to a private swimming pool and go to Braulio Carrillo national park.
Q: Should my child bring a lunch box?

A: YES! Your child should bring a lunch box every day with a drink. The fresh air gives kids an appetite, so pack plenty of food for both a lunch and a snack.
Q: Is there food available at Adventure Kids?

A: We do have a snack bar consisting of snacks, drinks, and candy. It is CASH ONLY so do not send money if you do not want your child to buy.
Q: What happens on our field trip day (Wednesday, Jan. 7)?

A:
On Wednesday we will go to Parque Nacional Braulio Carrillo, taking a short hike in the rainforest departing from the visitors' center near the tunnel on the highway to Limon. (we won't go to University for Peace this day). Parents are welcome to join us; please let me know if you'd like to come.
Q: Can I visit my child?

A: Yes, we have an open door policy for parents and you are welcome to come hang out with us any day. Just let me know when you'll be coming.
Q: Can I send my maid or driver?

A: Yes, but please give me their names and introduce me so I can identify them.
I am sure you have more questions; Carlos and I are happy to answer them for you! Just give us a call or send me an email.
Happy Camping to you!
